Glass balustrades and staircases have become one of the most sought-after interior features in Ghana's luxury residential and commercial properties. The clean, minimalist aesthetic of frameless glass — combined with the safety and durability of toughened or laminated glass — makes it the perfect choice for modern interiors.

In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about glass balustrades and staircases in Ghana.

Types of Glass Balustrade Systems

Frameless Glass Balustrades

Frameless glass balustrades use toughened glass panels fixed directly to the floor or structure using stainless steel or aluminium base channels or point fixings. There are no vertical posts — the glass panels stand alone, creating a completely unobstructed view. Frameless systems are the most elegant and contemporary option.

Semi-Frameless Glass Balustrades

Semi-frameless systems use slim aluminium or stainless steel posts at intervals, with glass panels fitted between them. This system is slightly less expensive than fully frameless and is suitable for most residential and commercial applications.

Glass Staircase Railings

Glass staircase railings combine a glass balustrade with a handrail — typically in stainless steel, aluminium or timber. The glass panels are fitted between the posts or into a base channel, with the handrail running along the top.

Safety Requirements for Glass Balustrades in Ghana

All glass balustrades must use safety glass — either toughened (tempered) glass or laminated glass. Toughened glass is heat-treated to be significantly stronger than standard glass and, if broken, shatters into small, relatively harmless fragments. Laminated glass consists of two or more glass panes bonded with a plastic interlayer — if broken, the fragments remain bonded to the interlayer.

For overhead glazing and applications where glass breakage could cause injury from falling glass, laminated glass is mandatory. For vertical balustrades, either toughened or laminated glass is acceptable.

"Safety is non-negotiable with glass balustrades. We only use certified safety glass on every installation — toughened or laminated, depending on the application." — Alucobond Ghana Glazing Team
