Aluminium windows are the dominant window type in Ghana's residential and commercial buildings — and for good reason. They are durable, low-maintenance, corrosion-resistant and available in a wide range of types and configurations suited to Ghana's tropical climate. But with so many suppliers and installers in Ghana's market, how do you choose the right windows and the right installer for your project? This guide covers everything you need to know.
Why Aluminium Windows Are the Best Choice for Ghana
Ghana's tropical climate creates specific demands for window materials that aluminium meets better than any alternative:
- Corrosion resistance: Aluminium does not rust — critical for coastal Ghana (Tema, Cape Coast, Takoradi, coastal Accra) where salt air rapidly corrodes steel windows.
- Dimensional stability: Aluminium does not warp, swell or shrink in Ghana's humidity and temperature variations — unlike timber, which warps and sticks in Ghana's wet season.
- UV resistance: Powder-coated aluminium windows do not fade, crack or peel in Ghana's intense equatorial sun — unlike painted timber or PVC.
- Low maintenance: Aluminium windows require only occasional cleaning — no painting, no treating, no annual maintenance.
- Design flexibility: Aluminium can be extruded into virtually any profile shape and powder-coated in any colour — offering far more design flexibility than other window materials.
Types of Aluminium Windows Available in Ghana
Casement Windows
Side-hung windows that open outward — the most popular type for Ghanaian homes. Casement windows provide excellent ventilation and are easy to clean. They are available in single, double and triple configurations and can be fitted with mosquito screens.
Sliding Windows
Panels that slide horizontally — space-efficient and popular for bedrooms, kitchens and balconies. Sliding windows do not project outward when open, making them ideal for locations where an outward-opening window would be obstructed.
Awning Windows
Top-hung windows that open outward at the bottom — they can remain open in light rain, making them ideal for bathrooms and service areas in Ghana where ventilation is needed even during rain.
Louvred Windows
Multiple horizontal glass blades that can be adjusted for airflow — the traditional tropical ventilation window. Popular in Ghana for service areas, stairwells and locations where ventilation is the primary requirement.
Fixed Windows
Non-opening windows for maximum light and views — typically used in combination with opening windows to provide ventilation alongside fixed glazed areas.
Folding Windows
Multiple panels that fold and stack to one side — creating a fully open connection between interior and exterior. Increasingly popular in Ghana's modern homes and restaurants.
What to Look for When Buying Aluminium Windows in Ghana
Not all aluminium windows in Ghana are equal. Key quality indicators to look for:
- Alloy specification: Quality windows use 6063-T5 or 6061-T6 aluminium alloy — not recycled or unspecified alloy. Ask your supplier for the alloy specification.
- Wall thickness: Profile wall thickness should be at least 1.4mm for residential windows, 1.8mm or more for commercial. Thin profiles flex and distort.
- Powder coat quality: Quality powder coating is applied electrostatically and cured at 180–200°C. It should be at least 60 microns thick. Thin or poorly applied coatings peel and fade.
- Hardware quality: Hinges, handles, locks and rollers should be stainless steel or aluminium — not zinc alloy, which corrodes rapidly in Ghana's humidity.
- Custom fabrication: Every window should be fabricated to the exact dimensions of your opening — not cut from standard sizes. Ill-fitting windows leak and are difficult to operate.
